Carla-Renee Sherwood

Registered Psychologist (B. Psych, Grad Dip), EMDRAA Accredited Consultant & EMDR Institute Facilitator

I’m a Registered Psychologist, an Accredited EMDR Therapy Consultant with both EMDRAA and EMDRIA registration, and a Facilitator for EMDR Institute Australia.

I provide Online Telehealth Psychological sessions and am registered with Medicare so Australian clients may claim Medicare rebates on their Mental Health Treatment Plans (MHTP).

Originally from Cairns, North Queensland, during the past decade I have worked across a number of settings including public health, private practice and inpatient treatment.

Most recently, I lived and worked at a primary inpatient addiction treatment centre in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand for two years, providing psychological services to clients from around the world with complex and developmental trauma, PTSD, addictions, depression and anxiety, complex grief and loss, personality disorders, and food, body and sleep disorders.

I am trained and experienced in a range of other therapeutic modalities, including:

  • MI (Motivational Interviewing)

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy)

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

  • ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)

  • IFS (Internal Family Systems therapy)

  • Mindfulness and Meditation practices

Holistic Approach

I value and practice a holistic and systematic approach to health and wellbeing through a combination of mind, body and soul work, and believe in the importance of nutrition as medicine. I consume a plant-based diet and have also completed several nutrition and detoxification courses in Thailand.

I am an avid yoga student with training in meditation and mindfulness techniques and have completed a number of silent meditation retreats in Australia and Thailand. I have completed numerous workshops, seminars and retreats with Buddhist Monks and meditation experts, including S. N. Goenka, Bruno Cayoun, Alan Wallace, Matthieu Ricard and Tenzin Palmo and actively study their philosophies and practices.

I approach my work with a ‘practice what you preach’ mentality. I have been on a personal health and wellbeing journey for 10 years, engaging in a range of different therapies, modalities and healing techniques.

I believe having an open mind is important when healing trans-generational and family trauma patterns and there is no ‘one size fits all’.

It can be hard work and I believe balance is important. You may go through the blood, sweat and tears but you’ll also have a laugh, and feel validated, supported and cared for.

I will ‘hold space’ for you where appropriate for you to experience yourself and your thoughts, feelings and emotions.

I am an optimist and always like to see the good in people. I will help you find your light, and work with that.

We are all interconnected. We cannot treat a holistic problem with a partial solution.

We are all masters in some fields, and babies in others. I actively seek out professional development opportunities that enhance my skills in the field of EMDR Therapy, Structural Dissociation and Trauma. I practice with integrity and ethics and if something is beyond my scope then I may refer you where appropriate to outside resources and referrals.
